   Submitted by Jennifer Fajman

SIGUCCS (Special Interest Group for University and College Computing Services) hosted two successful conferences during 2001-2002 and ended the year with a significant fund balance, with increased membership.

The Executive Committee members are:  Jennifer Fajman, chair; Robert Paterson, vice chair; Linda Hutchison, secretary-treasurer; Linda L. Downing, Susan E. Hales, Alan Herbert, and Lawrence K. Pickett, Jr. are members-at-large.  John Bucher serves as the immediate past-chair.

Transition to Conference Only SIG:

SIGUCCS completed its transition from a general purpose SIG to a Conference Only SIG and formed a new Executive Committee (called Conference Steering Committee), effective on July 1, 2002.  The new members are:  Robert Paterson, Chair; Lida Larsen, Conference Liaison (Vice Chair); Nancy Bauer, Information Director; Jerome Smith, Secretary; Al Herbert, Treasurer; Jennifer Fajman, Past Chair; Jack Esbin, Treasurer for the CSMS conferences; Linda Downing, Responsible for Tutorials.  All appointments are for two year terms, with the exception of Nancy Bauer and Jerome Smith, which are three year appointments.

A CD containing the proceedings of the fall conference was sent to all SIGUCCS members.  Also, current members were granted a free one year membership to the SIG.

Conference Planning:

SIGUCCS selected Conference Technology Enhancements (CTE) to provide support for the fall and spring conferences.  In March, the executive committee met with two members of CTE to discuss SIGUCCS needs and what CTE can offer to meet the needs.

A contract was established with CTE to support the fall and spring conferences.  The fall conference is well underway, so some of the support to be provided by CTE is already completed.  However, for the spring CSMS 2003 conference, CTE will be a strong team member.

The SIGUCCS Executive Committee wants to work with CTE on marketing issues, for the conferences as well as for SIGUCCS.  This concept needs more development in the upcoming year, although CTE has helped tremendously with marketing of the spring conference.

Location of Future Conferences:

The spring conference has always been held in St. Louis.  It was decided that a change in the location of the conference might meet the membership needs better and attract people from different locations.  The Executive Committee elected to move the spring conference to various locations throughout the country.

In collaboration with ACM, SIGUCCS has contracted with hotels for the fall and spring conferences through 2005.  The locations for future conferences are:

Fall Conference:             2003     San Antonio, Texas

2004          Baltimore, Maryland

2005          Monterey, California

Spring Conference          2003     Monterey, California

2004          Santa Fe, New Mexico

2005          Charleston, South Carolina

Conferences:

The Fall User Services Conference was held October 17-20 in Portland, Oregon.  The theme was “Bridging the Gap: Technology, Service and You".  390 people attended the conference, with tutorial registration at 195. 74 papers were published in the proceedings, which were made available in both hard copy and CD Rom format.  There were also discussion, panel and poster sessions as part of the conference. The conference had a surplus of approximately $25,000.

The spring Computer Services Management Symposium (CSMS) was held March 10 - 12, 2002 at its usual location in the St. Louis Marriott Pavilion Hotel.  The conference focused on “Changing Roles, Changing Rules”.  The conference was constructed as a series of plenary sessions and facilitated discussion groups.   93 people attended.  Financially, the conference made a profit of approximately $2,000.

Future conferences include the 2002 Fall User Services Conference to be held at the Westin Hotel and Conference Center, from November 20-23, 2002 in Providence, Rhode Island.  The theme of the conference is “Charting Bold Courses: New Worlds in User Services”.   The spring 2003 Computer Services and Management  Symposium will be at the Doubletree Hotel in Monterey, California from March 30 – April 1, 2003.

Financial and Membership Issues:

(Note: see SIG Services section in the annual report for SIGUCCS financial and membership data.)

We continue to maintain a healthy fund balance, thanks in a large part to the success of our two annual conferences.  As of the end of July 2002, our fund balance exceeded $300,000 and our membership is now over 450.

2000-2001 User Services Awards:

As we have done for many years, we held our documentation competition and awards in conjunction with the Fall User Services Conference in Portland, Oregon.  Information about the 32 recognitions of institutions and individuals can be viewed at the SIGUCCS Web Site (http://www.acm.org/siguccs/competitions/comp2001.htm).
