SIGUCCS (Special Interest Group for University and College Computing Services) hosted two successful conferences during 2004-2005 and ended the year with a significant fund balance. Membership continues to increase due, in part, to marketing efforts at conference events. The Executive Committee members for 2004/2005 were: Chair; Robert Paterson, Vice Chair; Nancy Bauer, Secretary; Jerome Smith, Treasurer; Jim Bostick, Information Director; Terry Lockard. Jennifer Fajman served as the immediate past-chair. There were 4 volunteers appointed as non-board members to head specific operational committees. Ethan Benatan coordinated tutorials for the both conferences, Shiree Moreland coordinated vendor relations, Lynnell Lacy coordinated the state captains program and Jack Esbin was the CSMS conference treasurer. These volunteers contributed significantly to the on going success of the conferences.
The Executive Committee holds planning meetings during each conference. To gather member input Focus Groups were held during the fall 2004 conference and the newly elected board will be considering the information gained from this effort. We still have not found a mechanism or volunteer base to provide Consulting Services but feel the issue is still a needed service and worth considering. SIGUCCS was successful as a Conference Only SIG through 2004/2005 but the SGB decision to eliminate different kinds of SIG categories meant that we rewrote our bylaws, proposed a slate of officers and elected them. Leila Lyons was elected Chair, Nancy Bauer as Vice Chair/ Conference Liaison, Terry Lockard as Information Director, Robert Haring Smith as Treasurer and Jen Whiting as Secretary. Robert Paterson became immediate Past Chair.
The SIGUCCS Awards Programs have been in place for many years. The two most recently established programs are the Penny Crane Award, to recognize significant multiple contributions from individuals over an extended period of time to SIGUCCS, and the Hall of Fame awards for the many individuals who have contributed their time and energies that have materially benefited SIGUCCS. For descriptions of the awards programs please go to: www.acm.org/sigs/siguccs/awards.htm Penny Crane Award – Linda Hutchison was the recipient of the 2004 Penny Crane Award, for more information please go to: www.acm.org/sigs/siguccs/awards/PCraneAwards/pc2004.htm Hall of Fame - There were 8 people installed in the Hall of Fame. They were: Linda Downing, M. Lloyd Edwards, Greydon C. Freeman, Alan Herbert, Thea Drell Hodge, Lida Larsen, Susan Nycum and Stan Yagi. For a description of the recipients please go to: www.acm.org/sigs/siguccs/awards/HallFame/fame2004.htm 2004 User ServicesAwards - As we have done for many years, we held our documentation competition and awards in conjunction with the Fall User Services Conference in Baltimore MD. A description of these awards and the 2004 winners can be found at: www.acm.org/sigs/siguccs/competit.htm
The thirty-third Fall User Services Conference was held 10 to 13 October 2004 in Baltimore MD. The theme was History in the Making. 445 people attended the conference, up 25% from the previous year. Proceedings were made available in CD ROM format. There were discussion, panel and poster sessions as part of the conference. The conference had a surplus of approximately $19,000. Following the theme established for the past several years of moving the conference to new locations, the thirty-second spring Computer Services Management Symposium (CSMS) was held from March 20 to 22 in Charleston, SC. The theme was: Sharing History: Transforming IT. The change in venue, and an aggressive marketing campaign attracted the largest participation since the mid 1990’s. The registrations were up slightly from the previous year. Approximately 122 people attended this conference. The conference was a series of plenary sessions, facilitated discussion groups and evaluated papers. From all aspects this conference was a huge success. Future conferences include the Fall User Services Conference to be held in Monterey CA, November 6 to 9 2005, and the CSMS in San Diego CA, April 9 to 11, 2006.
(Note: see SIG Services section in the annual report for SIGUCCS financial and membership data.) We continue to maintain a healthy fund balance, thanks in a large part to the success of our two annual conferences. As of the end of June 2005, our fund balance was approximately $282,000 and our membership was 498, up almost 10%. Our retention rate was steady at about 67%. |
