SIGUCCS, the Special Interest Group for University and College Computing Services, enjoyed a productive year in 1995-96, and looks forward to the implementation and completion of several new projects. At a special board meeting held in New York City in January, 1996, the board members paid particular attention to the development of new programs which could renew interest in our SIG and generate additional value for our membership. Several of these programs are currently underway. With this in mind, the board has very recently proposed that our terms be extended through June, 1999. We have received approval from the SIG Board for this extension, pending announcement in our summer newsletter.

Publications:

We published 3 newsletters this past year, including an updated membership list in the fall of 1995. As usual, we also published a proceedings of papers from the fall, 1995 User Services Conference. After a few years of inconsistent publication, we feel confident that our newsletter is back on track with a regular schedule.

Our SIGUCCS's web page is alive and healthy at ACM.ORG and is under the direction of our newsletter editor, Linda Downing. We continue to add to the information available on our pages, including links to university and college computing newsletters and our conferences' home pages.

Special Projects:

One special "informal information exchange" project has recently been completed and several additional projects are underway. This past spring, the board solicited organizational charts from our membership which were then photocopied and distributed to the participating members. We received over 40 charts from 38 institutions. We expect that this will be the first of several relatively informal efforts to collect and disseminate useful information to our members.

Other projects that have been assigned to various board members and/or other SIG volunteers include: development of conference proposal guidelines; special events and programs for first-time attendees at the fall conference; a rejuvenation of the "state captains" effort in order to encourage attendance at conferences.

The SIGUCCS Peer Review Process has enjoyed renewed success this past year, with two processes completed and several more in the planning stages. The board intends to strengthen this program in the coming year.

Conferences:

The fall User Services Conference, "Winning the Networking Game" was held October 15 - 18, 1995 at the St. Louis Marriott Pavilion Hotel with approximately 325 registrants. Six preconference tutorials were presented on Sunday, October 15. Keynote speakers were Vinton Cerf and Lauren Woodhouse; over 65 individual sessions were offered, including panel discussions, workshops and papers. Conference proceedings were published.

The spring Computer Services Management Symposium (CSMS) was held March 13 - 15, 1996, at its usual location in the St. Louis Marriott Pavilion Hotel. Approximately 110 people were registered.

Future conferences include the fall User Services Conference to be held in Chicago, September 30 - October 2, 1996, and the 1997 CSMS to be held at the usual St. Louis location in March, 1997.

Financial Issues:

Our SIG is in a reasonably good financial situation, with our fiscal year fund balance in excess of $110,000. This is more than double what the recommended balance should be for a SIG of our type and size. The fall 1995 User Services Conference ended with a surplus in excess of $30,000 and the spring Computing Services Management Symposium broke even.
