SIGUCCS (Special Interest Group for University and College Computing Services) had another successful year in 1998-1999 and progress was made in a couple of important areas. Our two annual conferences remain healthy, our membership appears to have stabilized, and we are fortunate to end the year with a significant fund balance.

After four years of the previous board membership, we held elections in the spring of 1999 and a new board was put into place on July 1, 1999. The new board members are: Jennifer Fajman, chair; Robert Paterson, vice chair; Linda Hutchison, secretary-treasurer; Linda L. Downing, Susan E. Hales, Alan Herbert, and Lawrence K. Pickett, Jr. Are members-at-large. John Bucher will serve as the immediate past-chair.

Publications:

We published Volume 28 of our newsletter in two mailings. Volume 28, Issues 1, 2, and 3 and Volume 28, Issue. 4

Our web pages have recently been updated and have taken on a new look. They now include information on our conferences, the Peer review Program, and a job posting service.

Special Projects:

Our Peer Review Process went through some redesign this past year and will soon be re-marketed. A description of the process is provided at: http://www.acm.org/siguccs/peer.htm

In early 1999 we began a discussion of a SIGUCCS service award program, to compliment our current documentation awards program. An ad hoc committee met at ACM headquarters in January to create a proposal, which was approved by the SIGUCCS executive committee at their St. Louis meeting in March, 1999. Jack Esbin has agreed to chair this awards committee, with the hope that we can provide the first award in November at the 1999 User Services conference (see note about Penny Crane at the end of this report).

Conferences:

The twenty-sixth fall User Services Conference was held on the campus of Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, October 25 - 28, 1998. The theme was "Branching Out." Approximately 325 people attended the conference, with tutorial registration at around 150.

The spring Computer Services Management Symposium (CSMS) was held March 7 - 9, 1999 at its usual location in the St. Louis Marriott Paviliion Hotel. The theme was "Talking it Over;" the conference was constructed as a series of plenary sessions and parallel facilitated discussion groups. Approximately 100 people attended.

Future conferences include the 1999 fall User Services to be held at the Denver Marriott City Center, November 7-10, 1999, and the CSMS at the St. Louis Marriott Pavilion in March, 2000.

Financial and Membership Issues:

(Note: see SIG Services section in the annual report for SIGUCCS financial and membership data.)

We continue to maintain a very healthy fund balance, thanks in large part to the success of our two annual conferences. As of late May, 1999, our fund balance exceeded $200,000.

Although our membership continues to decline, it's not doing so nearly so rapidly. We appear to be stabilized at around 400 total members.

Competitions and Awards:

As we have done for many years, we held our documentation competition and awards in conjunction with the fall user services conference. Diane Jung, was our ACM SIGUCCS Competitions Chair.
