Welcome to California!

Are you ready?

The members of the ACM/SIGUCCS '97 Planning Committee are looking forward to seeing you in Monterey next weekend. If you have not done so, check the Conference Web site at http://www.acm.org/siguccs/fall97/index.htm for up-to-date information on the technical program, Monterey and the surrounding area, as well as the weather.

Sunday Special Event

This year's Sunday sweatshirt reception will be held at the world-famous Monterey Bay Aquarium. We have the Aquarium reserved from 7:00pm - 11:00pm. We will stroll through the "Near Shore" exhibit areas while enjoying a buffet dinner and wearing our school colors.

Buses will start shuttling people to the Aquarium from the DoubleTree at 6:30pm. You must check in at the registration desk to get your Conference badge before boarding the bus. Your badge admits you to the Aquarium. For those of you who would like to walk, it is a 20-minute brisk walk from the DoubleTree to the Aquarium.

"What's for dinner?" There will be two buffet tables, "Cannery Row" and "Southwestern Grill", to give you a taste of Monterey and California.

Cannery Row: Tossed salad , artichokes and dip, cucumber salad, Focaccia bread, grilled chicken breast , steamed mussels & clams, and crispy calamari

Southwestern Grill: Black bean salad, Spanish rice, fajitas with black beans, chicken or beef filling, tamales with chicken, Greek salad (not really Southwestern, gut we like Greek salad!!)

Don't forget to wear your school or organization sweatshirt!

Tutorials

Tutorials AM1, AM2, AM4, and PM3 still have space. If you areinterested in attending one of these tutorials, send Pat Kava at mpkava@ucdavis.edu an e-mail message. There is a fee for the tutorials. For a description of the tutorials see the TutorialWeb page at http://www.acm.org/siguccs/fall97/tutorial.htm.

Birds of a Feather

Birds of a Feather (BOF) sessions are informal gatherings to discuss common issues or topics. BOF's are 'self-forming' with some assistance from the Conference Committee. Sign-up sheets will be available at the Registration Desk. There will be three opportunities for BOF's during SIGUCCS '97. Table topics can be arranged during Monday's lunch. These table topics will provide a conversational topic or theme for discussion at the table. Monday and Tuesday afternoon between 5:00pm and 6:00pm we will have BOF sessions for groups of any size.

Lisa Goldberg, University of Rochester, is coordinating the BOFs. If you have topic suggestions, please send her e-mail at LOTA@DB1.cc.rochester.edu.

Sessions Chairs

Please note. There is a session chair meeting on Sunday evening from 5:00pm - 6:00pm. Session chairs should plan to attend. Marion Taylor, Binghamton University, and John Lateulere, Otterbein College, will lead this session to go over session chair duties.

Saturday Dinner

If you're arriving Saturday and don't have plans for dinner, rally around the SIGUCCS registration desk, ground floor, DeAnza ballroom foyer after 5 p.m. The "locals" will have dining advice. If there is sufficient demand, we may even organize gastronomically homogenous groups to send out to the local restaurants.

Conference Dress

This is California and the dress code is California casual! Layers work best.

Weather

Good question. Check the Web before you come. Monterey weather is on the Conference Web page or you can access the weather site directly at http://www.weather.com/weather/us/cities/CA_Monterey.html. As of today the five day forecast predicts a cloudy high of 67 this Saturday.

Have a safe trip and see you all in Monterey.
