These competitions recognize outstanding printed and Web publications developed at college and university computing centers. Awards for the competitions will be presented at the ACM SIGUCCS User Services Conference, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, October 25-28, 1998.

- The Computing Organization (Printed & Web)
- Description: An overview publication about your computing center
- One (1) Web entry and one (1) printed entry per institution
- Judges:

General Competition Guidelines & Deadlines
- Qualifications. Your entry must be developed by staff who are affiliated with a college or university.
- Entry deadline is September 15. Any entries sent via US Mail should be postmarked no later than Sept 15, and any entries sent on Sept 15 should be sent via Federal Express. No exceptions or extensions will be granted.
- Acceptable media. We will accept entries submitted ONLY on paper and via the Web. We will NOT accept entries on diskette, CD Rom, or video.
- First Place winners for each of the competition categories
will be the judges for next year's competitions.
- How to submit your entries:
- Web entries: Complete and send the Web Entry Form.
- Printed entries:
- Complete and send the Web Entry Form to alert us to expect your printed entry.
- Print out the Web entry form, fill out the printed copy, then send it, along with 3 copies of your entry, by U.S. Mail to the correct address on the entry form.

Judging Criteria For ALL Categories
Printed
- First Impression: Approachable, motivating, inviting, clarity of purpose
- Cohesive/consistent design
- Stated objectives (from entry form) are met. (Specified purpose, audience level, etc.)
- Obvious and logical organization
- Easy navigation
- Effective use of language
- Effective use of graphics & overall visual appearance
- Effective page/screen layout
- Obvious identification of the organization/owner of the publication
World Wide Web
Note: Judges will need to agree on the number of levels to view per entry.
- Effective screen layout
- Effective adaptation of language and content to Web medium
- Acceptable response time
- Conforms to default window sizes across platforms
- Page length appropriate to content
- Link names reflect title of target page
- Displays effectively in a range of browsers
- Effective use of feedback methods
- Effective use of animation
- Timeliness of content
- Printability (if applicable)

Judging Criteria for Specific Categories
The following criteria are to be applied *IN ADDITION TO* the general categories listed above.
Category 1: The Computing Organization (Printed & Web)
- Access to the service is obvious and easy
- Well developed and cohesive set of services
Category 2: Specific Computing Services (Printed & Web)
- Access to the service is obvious and easy
- Well developed and cohesive set of services
Category 3: Computing Center Newsletter (Printed & Web)
- Effective delivery of "news"
Category 4: How-To Guides & Classroom Training Materials (Printed & Web)
- Logical sequencing of task flow
- Appropriate blend of conceptual overview and step-by-step instruction
- Effective analogies used to promote conceptual understanding
- Relevant examples chosen to demonstrate tasks
- Attention to differences in the instructional environment and the individual's environment
- Portability of instruction (to different instructors and environments)
