Keynote Speakers
Douglas Hofstadter, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of "Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid," "Metamagical Themas," and "Le Ton beau de Marot," will deliver the conference keynote address on Monday morning. Hofstadter is Professor of Computer Science and Cognitive Science at Indiana University, as well as Director of the Center for Research on Concepts and Cognition, and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, Psychology, Comparative Literature, and the History and Philosophy of Science. He's had considerable impact in many disciplines, ranging from philosophy to mathematics to artificial intelligence to music, and beyond.
Suzanne Thorin was named Dean of the Indiana University Libraries in July 1996, leaving her post as associate librarian of the Library of Congress. She held many positions within the Library of Congress including four years as the Library's Chief of Staff, acting director of The Library of Congress Public Service and Collection Management; chief, General Reading Rooms Division; assistant chief of that division; head, Research Facilities; and head, Music Section, National Library Services for the Blind and Physically Handicapped.
At the Library of Congress Ms. Thorin managed a staff of more than 1,000, with authority for administrative support services, including information technology, human resources, security, and space planning. She also served as the official US representative, appointed by the White House, for the G-7 electronic libraries project, one of eleven G-7 pilot projects for the Global Information Society. She was responsible for the National Digital Library Program, which includes its historical collections effort; THOMAS, a legislative information system; GLIN, a global law information network; World Wide Web presentations; and Internet policy.
Under her leadership, the IU Libraries are undertaking a digital library program that will bring together various digital projects already underway, including the Variations project at the School of Music and the Victorian Women Writers Project.
Ms.Thorin holds a bachelor's degree in music education from North Park College in Chicago (1963), and masters degrees in music history and literature (1964) and in library science (1968) from the University of Michigan. She was associate professor of music and music librarian at Indiana University of Pennsylvania from 1980-82.

His video, "Teambuilding: How to Manage and Motivate People" was the #2 best-selling business video in America. In 1993 he was selected by ECI/Westcott Communications as one of 11 Masters On Motivation for their business television series. Presentations magazine featured him in the article, "Masters of the Microphone." In 1995, Mark earned the CSP designation (certified speaking professional) and was honored with the CPAE award (council of peers award of excellence) from the National Speakers Association.
