Friday/Saturday


Arriving early? SIGUCCS attendees arriving on Friday or Saturday will find plenty to do in our college town. On Saturday night at the Bloomington Convention Center (next door to the Courtyard by Marriott) you can enjoy the IU Soul Review opening for rhythm and blues Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Famer, Johnny Otis. Tickets are $20 at the door.

Opera lovers can attend IU Opera Theater's production of Carmen, part of its 50th season celebration. Performances are Friday and Saturday nights. Purchase your opera tickets in advance by calling the Musical Arts Center Box Office at (812) 855-7433.

We'll list other activities on this Web page the week before SIGUCCS. And you can always follow the crowds to a variety of eating and drinking establishments. Many have live music on weekends.

First-Timer Orientation
5:30-6:30pm, IMU Maple Suite

If this is your first SIGUCCS conference, we invite you to a special Orientation on Sunday at 5:30pm. Penny Crane, one of the founding members of SIGUCCS, and John Bucher, current chair of the SIGUCCS Executive Committee, will provide tips on getting the most from this annual meeting. They will advise you on selecting from among the many offerings on the technical program, networking with other attendees, and finding the food. Volunteer mentors will make you feel like an old timer in no time. Your host, Rita Pavolka, will lead a tour of the Indiana Memorial Union.

Briefing for Session Chairs
5:30-6:30pm, IMU Oak Suite

Session chairs introduce presenters, keep them on time, present them with appreciation gifts, handle evaluations, and assist presenters with audio/visual and computer equipment, Internet connections, and IP numbers.

If you will be chairing a session at SIGUCCS '98, or just want to see how it's done, please meet in the IMU Oak Suite at 5:30pm. Nancy Bauer and the Speaker Prep coordinator will take you through your responsibilities, from meeting your presenters at a speakers' breakfast through closing the room after your session.

Conference Opening Mixer
6:30-8:30pm, IMU Alumni Hall Solarium

Sunday evening is the traditional pre-conference gathering for all attendees. Come and say hello to old friends and colleagues. Meet the newcomers with a #1 on their badges and their mentors with an M on their badges. (Want to volunteer to mentor a first-timer? See the Volunteer page.) Refreshments and a cash bar will be on hand.

RESCUE software

Computer Support Technologies of Ann Arbor, Michigan will demonstrate their RESCUE software, which enables support staff to to remotely diagnose and fix problems with users' computers.

Special "Birds-of-a-Feather" Usability Tour & Demonstration
5:15-6:15, Meet at IMU lower lobby entrance for short bus ride to the Wrubel Computing Center

Cathy Spiaggia, Manager of Usability Consulting Services, for IU's University Information Technology Services will provide a tour of the UITS Usability Lab and a demonstration of a usability testing session. See first-hand how usability testing can help guide your decisions about design and information structure.

Technology Showcase

7:30-8:30pm — Presentations, Chemistry Auditorium 8:30-10:00pm — Tours of technology sites

Don't miss this opportunity to see how technology is featured in research and instruction at Indiana University. Join us for a light buffet dinner in the Atrium of the Chemistry building, right across the lane from the IMU. After the presentations in the Chemistry Auditorium, you can tour the Molecular Visualization Facility's StereoView Room and the Virtual Reality/Virtual Environment Lab's CAVE.

Ice Cream Social

Following the tours, gather in the Hospitality Suite for an ice cream social sponsored by Computer Support Technologies. Bring your sheet music if you'd like to entertain at the grand piano or lead a sing-along.

Special "Birds-of-a-Feather" Tour of the STCs

University Information Technology Services maintains over 40 Student Technology Centers (STCs), providing IUB students with hundreds of workstations equipped with the software students need to complete their academic work. The STCs are staffed by knowledgeable, trained consultants. Sue Perin, manager of UITS STC Consulting will lead a walking tour of some of these sites while she shares her strategies for managing over 150 part-time student consultants with a high turn-over rate. Wear comfortable shoes.

Special "Birds-of-a-Feather" Demonstration of TLTL
5:15pm, Gather outside University Club Lobby

The Teaching and Learning Technologies Laboratory (TLTL) provides IUB faculty, instructors, and departmental computing support providers with help in incorporating technology into instruction. Director David Goodrum will provide an overview of the Lab's services and answer questions. Cordah Robinson, one of the team of consultants/developers, will demonstrate some of the Lab's tools as well as some of its most successful projects. It's a 3-minute walk from the IMU to Ballantine Hall.

CBT Happy Hour
6:00-8:00pm, Hospitality Suite (University Club)

CBT Systems Ltd. will sponsor a happy hour Tuesday evening in the Hospitality Suite. CBT representatives will be on hand to demonstrate the computer-based training programs they offer to colleges and universities. Several schools participating in SIGUCCS have contracts with CBT, so take advantage of this opportunity to get a balanced view from the company and your colleagues. Cocktails and snacks will be provided.

Tuesday Evening Gala Party
8:30-11:00pm, Alumni Hall & Solarium

Celebrate another successful SIGUCCS Conference at Tuesday evening's Gala Party. Past conferences indicate that the hard core dancers in the group love rock 'n roll, so SH-BOOM, a renowned dance band from St. Louis, has been invited to entertain. Refreshments and a cash bar will be available. Come and rock the night away with your colleagues.
