Changing Roles, Changing Rules

Session Description

Management Track, Session IV
Session topic: The CIO Role and Position--What are the next evolutionary steps?
Session presenter: Larry Haffner, Fairmont State College
Format: Facilitated discussion
Description:
The role and position of "CIO" has evolved, from a manager of data processing to a senior-level administrator with a "seat at the table" and broad responsibilities over multiple technology areas. We could discuss that a CIO really is, or CIO vs. CTO, or appropriate titles, or portfolios of appropriate are responsibilities. However, the real question is, what will the "typical" CIO role be in 5 to 10 years-and what leadership skills and roles will be required as it continues to evolve? Is there life after or beyond current CIOship-an evolutionary career path? Can your president or colleague administrators (or even you?!) articulate a clear view of not only your current role, but where it will need to go in the future? How will technology continue to impact organizational structures and change-and how in turn will that impact the role of the CIO and others?
