| Description: | |
| We are all faced with the continuing challenge of managing the desktop replacement cycle. Even if we can find the necessary continuous funding streams, there is still the difficult task of managing the ongoing process itself-setting minimum hardware configurations, coordinating the purchases, coordinating the install/swap, reusing or surplusing the old machines, setting policies to encourage participation/compliance, etc. This session will provide an overview of one institution's approach for managing all of the components of this cycle. The presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer discussion session facilitated by the presenters. This will give participants the chance to share alternative or similar strategies they have in place, discuss how various plans and components work relative to varying institutional size and politics, discuss the collaboration necessary between CIO and CFO, and other related macro issues. It will also be a chance to discuss the more "mundane" micro issues of the process-like ensuring that old machines are really gone, how many trickle-down swaps do you allow, how do you maximize procurement without swamping your installation teams, how do you deal with exceptional needs, etc. | |
