Speaker Bio

Dr. Janice Biros, Associate Vice President (AVP), leads the Instructional Technology Support Department (within the Office of Information Resources and Technology), which emphasizes Drexel University’s key mission of technology-focused education. She has been responsible for promoting and facilitating the integration of technology into the academic program at Drexel since 1986.

As AVP for Instructional Technology she maintains close contact with the academic community, serving as the "computing and technology" representative on various University and faculty committees, initiating and supporting collaborative teaching and learning efforts among faculty, departments, and the library. Other duties include serving as Drexel's representative to external bodies, especially in relation to academic computing (e.g., EDUCOM), and to other external constituencies with which the University has "instructional computing centered" relationships (e.g., the Philadelphia School District, international programs, satellite campuses, etc.).

Dr. Biros is also responsible for the centrally supported online course development at Drexel. Her group includes the training and support staff that is available to assist faculty in redesigning courses for the web using WebCT. This online course development initiative focuses on both technology and multi-media tools and the pedagogical concepts integral to redesigning course content for delivery on the web. Her group is also responsible for the development of the Drexel CD, which is distributed to 15,000 faculty, staff, and students each September and contains technical information and licensed software.

Her responsibilities also include the Voice Communications Group, which supports four PBX switches at three campuses. In addition, this Group oversees voice mail, automated attendant systems, and student telephone and cable TV services. Dr. Biros has also served as interim CIO at two small Philadelphia colleges, providing leadership and strategic planning. Drexel now contracts with those schools to provide IT services and support under her direction.
