Keynote Speaker: Carlton VogtThe Language of PrivacyOne of the most pressing issues facing IT is privacy and the threats arising from technologies that can collect, store, and mine data in larger quantities and with greater precision. While debates over privacy rage in various circles, much of the discussion is clouded by inaccurate and imprecise terminology. The muddling of key concepts often leads to unacceptable conclusions. Many people think that to participate in modern life, we must "surrender our privacy." This is an erroneous assumption. Secrecy, anonymity, privacy, and confidentiality, while related, are clearly distinct concepts, and any fruitful discussion of privacy must recognize those distinctions.
