The University of Washington Catalyst LabGeek Qualification Training Program

Presenter: Greg Koester, University of Washington Catalyst

The LabGeek Qualification Program is UW Catalyst's staff training program and was designed to enable our student lab consultants to better support clients in our computing spaces. When the consultants joins Catalyst, they possess a great deal of talent and energy; through the LabGeek program, Catalyst seeks to harness that talent and energy and transform it into a community and culture of technological expertise.

Through the program, the consultants work to get `qualified` by acquiring signatures on pre-determined knowledge requirements. These knowledge requirements include all software and hardware in our computing spaces, as well as customer service skills and departmental specifics about Catalyst.

That qualification process entails learning the information or skill, then going to senior Catalyst staff for a `checkout` to determine if the consultant is proficient in the required knowledge. Once the consultant has successfully answered all questions asked by the interviewer, the consultant receives a signature for the knowledge requirement. The consultant repeats the process for all knowledge requirements. Upon completion of all knowledge requirements, the consultant goes through a review process, when they are retested on all the knowledge requirements. Once the board has passed the consultant, they are designated Qualfied LabGeek.
