Outsourcing Your Resnet

Does your financial model make sense?

Southwestern University and Skidmore College have both made the decision to outsource ResNet. Over the past 3 years, both organizations faced issues related to aging cabling infrastructure of the Residence Halls, high demand for Internet bandwidth, and the growth of recreational network use. Technical support staff members were also overloaded, attempting to deal with issues related to viruses and spyware.

This joint presentation will cover how outsourcing has controlled the costs associated with managing ResNet and has recovered valuable IT resources, notably staff time. Skidmore will focus on the process from conception to signing the contract, while Southwestern will give a review of their three year project. The presenters will review the factors that led to the decision to outsource, the process of championing change, what has gone well and what hasn't, the key impacts (including legal issues such as CALEA and DMCA,) and finally the expansion of ResNet services under the outsourcing arrangement, including the convergence of wireless, video, and traditional IP services.
