The Ten Dimensions of an Information Technology ProfessionalPresenter: Bob August, Our Lady of the Lake University The purpose of this paper/presentation is to review the ten dimensions of a professional and apply them to the field of Information Technology. The usage of the word "professional" in the context of this paper/presentation refers to the traditional meaning of the "learned professions", not simply someone who is compensated for their work. This paper/presentation is meant to serve as both a 'report card' and a map for helping to understand the role of the professional in today's contemporary information technology climate. The ten dimensions include: Acquired Body of Knowledge, Maintaining the Body of Knowledge, the Client/Provider Relationship, Professional Organizations, Service to the Profession, Codes of Conduct/Ethics, Certification through Examination, Regulating the Profession, Giving Back (Philanthropy), and the Profession as a Calling.
