Intricate Lessons in Project Management

Presenters:
Ann F. Harbor, The University of Memphis
John S. Wasileski, The University of Memphis
        Marie Dockter, St. Louis University

One of the most important skills of leadership is the ability to create the organizations and environments that lead complex projects. For higher education and technology, few projects encompass more complexity that implementing an ERP. Along with nearly 40% of institutions of higher learning (Gartner Survey of higher education plans to implement ERP), the schools of the Tennessee Board of Regents are in the midst of this activity and this panel discussion will focus on the realities inherent in creating statewide and campus management structures for managing the largest Banner implementation in SunGard`s history. Among the topics we will address are cultural issues, workloads, new skill development, vendor relationships, politics and the project leadership that enables success. We will also discuss the lessons we have learned that may help others in similar situations and will certainly help us in the future.
