Standardizing on a Personal Response System: One Solution Meeting Multiple Needs
Presenters:
Janet R. de Vry, University of Delaware
Nancy O’Laughlin, University of Delaware
Bob Slaman, GTCO CalComp
Personal Response Systems or “clickers” have the potential to transform learning through increased feedback and engagement. However, the current marketing strategy of textbook publishers which relies on exclusive agreements with clicker vendors could lead to students being required to purchase multiple clickers. Supporting various clicker systems on campus can potentially drain support resources and create confusion for faculty, students and staff. The answer is to standardize on one vendor, but the process of successfully selecting and working with a vendor, implementing, and supporting the use of this technology on an entire campus is a complex undertaking. Those in charge need to meet the needs of diverse groups. When the strategy meets the needs of diverse groups, they will work together for a successful outcome.
This panel will provide perspectives from key stakeholders who partnered to deliver a successful campus implementation at the University of Delaware of the GTCO CalComp’s Interwrite PRS system. Stakeholders include User Services management, User Services training and support staff, the vendor, faculty and students. Representatives
from three of the groups will participate in an interactive panel answering questions about key issues including how they worked together, what obstacles needed to be overcome, lessons learned, and steps to ensure success. Faculty and student perspectives will be presented by video. In addition, we will present insights gained from assessing
faculty and student satisfaction with clickers and their perceived benefits.Although the specific focus of this panel is personal response systems, similar stakeholders should be involved in any campus-wide classroom technology adoption. The participants’ insights into how they worked together for this successful rollout will be instructive for any IT manager or director.
