Title: The role of institutional culture and Its effect on the role of the CIO and IT staff
Institutional culture plays a huge role in the analyses and decisions of an IT leader's professional life. Especially in higher education, where key constituent groups regularly demand conflicting products and services, a CIO (or similar) must work within the institutional understanding of how things get done. Many factors contribute to this challenge, such as funding sources (public vs private), locational culture (urban, rural), diversity of the mission and curriculum (research, teaching, paraprofessional), and the university or college's political and social history (liberal, conservative, social engagement, etc.).
This panel discussion will bring together the audience and three experienced IT leaders to present their experiences in dealing with these issues. Some questions to be addressed include: How does one assess the culture of an institution? How far can an IT leader go in opposing that culture? What "best practices" apply across all institutions? How do the roles of middle management and front line staff get modified in various cultures? What cultural things do you look for when you're ready to consider a new position? The panelists work and have worked at a variety of institutional types. They will compare and contrast their experience and roles at these institutions and invite attendees to do likewise.
