Dear SIGUCCS Friends,

There are no words to express how deeply honored I feel at receiving the 2005 Penny Crane Award, but I can tell you there is no honor that would mean more to me.

SIGUCCS is about friendship and what friends do for one another. That was clear to me from the first time I attended a SIGUCCS conference. The message came from all sides, but nobody expressed it better or personified it more clearly than Penny.

Over the years, SIGUCCS has been for me a source of friendship and all that it entails -- ideas, support, encouragement, and an occasional nudge by somebody's boot toe in a part of my anatomy I can't see (yes, friends will do that for one another, too). You may never know what impact you have on someone else's life, and I suspect many of my SIGUCCS friends don't realize the extent of their influence on me; but people in SIGUCCS have been instrumental in both my professional and personal development. I am grateful.

It is gratifying and humbling to know that I have been so important to this organization that has been so important to me. I had not realized that. As I said, you never know . . .

To those of you who are deeply involved in SIGUCCS, thank you! To those who are not, become involved! Friendships deepen when friends work together. To everyone, know that in SIGUCCS, you are among friends. Pass it on, and may SIGUCCS prosper!
