The Penny Crane
Award recognizes individuals who have made significant
contributions to information technology in higher education and to SIGUCCS. The award is given only to those who provide
significant and continuing service to SIGUCCS over a period of many
years.
Penny Crane was a longtime
member and volunteer in the service of SIGUCCS and ACM. Her many
contributions exemplify the kind of service this award is intended to
recognize.
To be qualified for this
award, an individual will have:
Individual's Qualifications
- Been a member of
SIGUCCS over a relatively long term (but would not
necessarily have to be a current member).
- Been nominated
via a 500-word statement from a current member
of SIGUCCS (no self-nominations).
- Received
additional endorsements from at least five
current or former members of SIGUCCS who are familiar with
the contributions of the candidate.
- A record of long-term service to
higher education and the computing profession, as indicated by a
statement covering that service (normally a complete resume).
- A record of
extensive service to SIGUCCS, over a significant
period of time (normally ten or more years),
which could be checked against the records of
SIGUCCS and ACM.

qualify an individual include:
| SIGUCCS officer or

Nominations
Nominations, including all
endorsements, for the Penny Crane award are required to be made to the
selection committee by a deadline of
June 1 of each year. This will allow sufficient
review and selection in time for presenting the award at one
of the two annual SIGUCCS conferences during the following
fiscal year. If a nominee does not receive an award in the
first year following nomination, the nomination will remain
in effect for the following two years.
The Award
The award consists of an
honorarium of $1,000, a lifetime membership in SIGUCCS, and
a physical form of recognition, such as a plaque or
paperweight. Winners are determined by the
selection committee and are awarded their prizes at
one of the SIGUCCS annual conferences. Travel costs for the
recipient to attend the ceremony are also covered. The award
is normally given to no more than one individual each year,
but could, in unusual circumstances, be given to several
people at the same time. It would also be possible to give
no award at all in any specific year, if that is deemed the
appropriate course of action by the Selection
Committee.
The Endowment
In support of this award, an
endowment fund has been established within ACM.
Contributions from individuals and from SIGUCCS itself are
encouraged, with the goal of eventually accumulating the
amount of $40,000. That amount should earn sufficient
interest revenue to support the annual expenses for the
award, including travel and administrative costs. Until such
time as the goal is reached in the endowment fund, the
expense of this award will be borne by the SIGUCCS annual
operating budget. In any subsequent year in which interest
revenue from the endowment is not sufficient to support the
expenses, all or part of such expenses may be borne by the
SIGUCCS annual operating budget.
Anyone who wishes to contribute to
the fund may send a check made out to "ACM SIGUCCS Penny Crane Fund" to the attention
of:

of the contribution be required, include the complete name
and address of the donor.
